Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis)

Hyssopus officinalis is a shrub in the mint family. It is native to southern Europe and the middle east. Often used in traditional medicines, Hyssop is said to have antiseptic properties. Used in traditional medicines for cough relief and expectorant. Hyssop has been written about since ancient times and was even written about in the bible.

Hyssop is sometimes used as a cooking herb to flavor roasted meats, as a salad topping, and as an ingredient for brewing tea. Famously Hyssop was included in Benedictine an herbal liquor. The fragrant oil of hyssop has a similar scent to that of Lavender and for this reason it is often included in aromatic fragrances and essential oils.

Used in middle ages as a ward against the plague, hyssop was thought to purify the home. Most commonly used in washes to cleanse tools before working or consecrating and used to clean the temple.
