Garlic (Allium sativum)

Arguably the most well known herb. Garlic is one of the most used herbs around the world. This perennial plant, and produces edible bulbs composed of many individual cloves. Garlic in it's many forms is most commonly associated with protection. Every child on the planet knows that if there is one thing that a Vampire can't stand, it's garlic! This actually comes from ancient folklore and traditions which use garlic to ward off evil spirits. 

The ancient Greeks wore it out of a believe that it would protect them from illness, theft, and prevent evil spirits from possessing them. It' is commonly used in cleansing rituals. Garlic has also been regarded as an aphrodisiac, this was taken so series at points in history that monks were forbidden from ingesting garlic as it was seen as a breach of an oath of celibacy.

Garlic is also associated to the goddess Hecate, and as such is often used in banishing spells. Traditionally a braid of twelve bulbs of garlic is hung over the entryway to the home to discourage jealous people, thieves, and evil spirits from entering the home.
