Cinquefoils (Potentilla)
Also know as Five Finger Grass, or Silverweeds and are part of a genus containing over 300 species of annual, biennial and perennial herbaceous flowering plants in the rose family, Rosaceae.
In is believe by some that a strong tea made from the leaves which are high in Tannin can be used as an antiseptic astringent. It has also been used as a treatment for dysentery and diarrhea. It has also been used to sooth inflamed skin. The fresh juice can be mixed with honey to soothe a sore throat. The powdered root is said to stop bleeding.
In Medieval Europe, Cinquefoil was used protection, success with tasks, and often it is featured as an ingredient in love potions. It is viewed as the physical embodiment of symbolism, seeing the five petals of the flower as representational of the five sense and a mastery of self. As such this herb was a popular amulet worn by knights into battle.
